Ultra Fractal Tutorial - The Making of "Lords of Arrakis"
Part 7. Creating the "space ring" layer.

Page 5. Adjust layer properties.

Step 14. Set Merge Mode for "space ring" layer.

In the upper portion of the image, the "space ring" layer is the only layer visible. Since we want it to interact with the layers below it, we will set the Merge Mode for the "space ring" layer to "Lighten".

A. In the Layers tab, with the "space ring" layer highlighted, set its Merge Mode to "Lighten".

The image should now look like this:

Now the background is starting to look like a space scene. And it is looking both unified and, with the slightly curved and diagonal thrust of the space ring, it looks dynamic, as well.

There is an unwanted interaction with the nearby planet, though. The space ring is supposed to be more distant than the planet and should not have any effect on the planet's near face. We could remove this interaction by putting a blocking clipping circle in the "space ring" layer. But a simpler way is to move the "space ring" layer to a position in the layer stack below the "nearby planet" layer. While we are moving the "space ring" layer lower in the layer stack, we could also see what the space ring would look like if colored by the "coloring" layer by moving it even lower in the layer stack, to a position that is also below the "coloring" layer.

Step 15. Reposition "space ring" layer.

A. In the Layer Properties Tool Window, click and drag the "space ring" layer to a position just below the "coloring" layer and release it.

Make sure all layers agree with the layers chart. (Click here to view Layers Chart.).

The image should now like this:

This is the final stage-7 composite image.

Step 16. Save development file.

A. Save the development file.
