Ultra Fractal Tutorial - The Making of "Lords of Arrakis"
Part 6. Creating the "planet edgelight" layer.

Page 2. Create new layer.

Step 3. Duplicate and rename "lords 1" layer.

A. In the Layers tab for the development file, click on the "lords 1" layer to highlight it.
Make sure the Merge Mode is set to "Normal" and the Layer Transparency slider is set to "100%".

B. Click on the Add Layer icon.

C. A new layer will appear above the "lords 1" layer.
Right-click on the highlighted area of the new layer.

D. In the popup menu that appears, click on Rename.
In the highlighted area, type in the new name, "planet edgelight", and press Enter.

Step 4. Turn off all other layers.

Since at this point we will be developing a transparent layer, we will temporarily hide all the other layers from view in order to avoid confusion.

A. Shift-Click on the Visibility icon for the "planet edgelight" layer once or twice as required to set the visibility icon to "on" for the "planet edgelight" layer and "off" for all other layers.
Do the same for the Editable icon.
Make sure the Transparent icon is "on" for at least the "planet edgelight" layer (since we will need this setting to do our transparency masking later).

The composite image as we see it at this point is simply the "planet edgelight" layer, which in turn is simply a duplicate of the "lords 1" layer:

Step 5. Reposition "planet edgelight" layer.

A. Drag the "planet edgelight" layer upward in the layer stack to the position just above the "nearby planet" layer and release it.
