Ultra Fractal Tutorial - The Making of "Lords of Arrakis"
Part 5. Creating the "nearby planet" layer.

Page 2. Create new layer.

Step 3. Duplicate and rename "coloring" layer.

A. In the Layers tab for the development file, highlight the "coloring" layer.
Click on the Add Layer icon.

B. A new layer will appear above the "coloring" layer.
Right-click on the highlighted area of the new layer.

C. In the popup menu that appears, click on Rename.
In the highlighted area, type in the new name, "nearby planet", and press Enter.

Step 4. Adjust layer properties.

A. In the layers tab, set the layer properties for all layers as shown below:
(Some layers may need to be brought into view by using the scroll bar.)

Make sure that the "nearby planet" layer is highlighted.

The image should now look like this:

Here's an explanation of the composite image that is visible at this point:

1. The "star" layer is at the top of the stack and is set at a merge mode of "Lighten", its white star showing against its back background, which in turn is visible where there are no lighter areas in the layers below it.

2. The next lower layer, "nearby planet", which at this point is a duplicate of the layer below it, "coloring", has a "Normal" merge mode and, because of its solid fill transparency masking, has its black areas cut out, forming areas of transparency. Therefore, due to the "Lighten" merge mode of the "star" layer, in the areas where the "star" layer is black, the nontransparent, colored areas of "nearby planet" are visible, with portions of the "lords" objects of the "lords 2" and "lords 1" layers below it showing through the holes caused by its solid fill transparency masking (notice the blue forms of the four "lords" showing through the aligned "holes" in the upper layers in the top third of the image).
