Ultra Fractal Tutorial - The Making of "Lords of Arrakis"
Part 2. Creating the "coloring" layer.

Page 2. Create new layer.

Step 3. Duplicate and rename "lords 1" layer.

A. In the Layers tab for the development file, click on the "lords 1" layer to highlight it.
Make sure the Merge Mode is set to "Normal" and the Layer Transparency slider is set to "100%".

B. Click on the Add Layer icon.

C. A new layer will appear above the "lords 1" layer.
Right-click on the highlighted area of the new layer.

D. In the popup menu that appears, click on Rename.
In the highlighted area, type in the new name, "coloring", and press Enter.

(Note that the Merge Mode and Layer Transparency of the "coloring" layer initially are the same as for the "lords 1" layer.)

Step 4. Set the Layer Icons for the "lords 1" and "coloring" layers.

A. Each row in the Layers tab represents a layer, only one of which can be highlighted at a time. Each layer has 3 icons at its left edge. From left to right, these are: visible, editable, and transparent.

Set the "lords 1" and "coloring" layers to "visible" (visible icon on).
Set the "lords 1" layer to "not editable" (editable icon off) and the "coloring" layer to "editable" (editable icon on), so that editing done at this time will be applied only to the "coloring" layer.
Set the "lords 1" and "coloring" layers to "transparent" (transparent icon on) to enable solid-color transparency masking.

Step 5. Remove "Lake" transformation.

A. In the Mapping tab, highlight the Lake transformation and click on the Delete icon.
